Please note that these are high quality professional
standard dies that with correct care and use will give many years of service.
Not to be confused with the cheaper and inferior 'market stall' quality tools
that are available from some sources
and are good for a couple of jobs and
completely useless when used with certain materials.
All our taps and dies are manufactured from HSS (High
Speed Steel) or HQS (a manufacturers brand name for HSS with improved toughness
properties)
We do not stock low grade carbon steel taps and dies.
These dies are suitable for working with a large range of
ferrous and non-ferrous metals including stainless steel.
We also list Die Holders to
suit all our 13/16" Diameter Dies

Please note that piano wire in the
manufactured state is usually relatively very hard and so if you are
cutting threads on this material, we strongly recommend that the
material is annealed (softened) where the thread is to be cut
to preserve die life. Failure to anneal the material can lead to
rapid dulling of the die cutting teeth and even complete failure of the die
through fractured teeth.
Effective annealing of steel piano wire can usually be achieved by
simply heating to cherry red and allowing to cool slowly.
Please also be aware that commercially manufactured push rods are
usually manufactured using a thread rolling process for which
undersized rod diameters are used (the process forms a thread major
dia larger than the original rod dia) so extending the thread on
these rods using a die is difficult. Best results will obtained by
making push rods using the correct dia rod diameter (2mm for M2
etc). Our Silver Steel rods, listed
here, give excellent results. |
